Anyone going to Notting Hill Carnival? The Notting Hill Carnival began back in 1964, but was a far smaller event then with only around 500 people in attendance, much fewer than the million-strong crowd that flocks to the carnival today. Of course, its roots can be traced back further to the older Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, but it has since grown significantly in popularity to become Europe’s biggest street festival.
Our hire section in Shaftesbury Avenue store has a great range of Carnival costumes to get you ready for the big day!

Robe a la francaise, printed cotton, fabric 1750-75, garment probably remade significantly in nineteenth century, French.
Like a lot of eighteenth-century gowns, this one seems to have fallen prey to the demands of nineteenth-century fancy dress. The trimming is highly atypical, the front appears to have been reworked and the shape of the back pleats is all wrong for an eighteenth-century garment - possibly to make up for letting out the garment for a larger wearer. On the other hand, that chintz is just to die for.
